Summary: This is the helmet law adopted by Cary, NC in 2001.
Town of Cary, N. C. Code of Ordinances:
Sec. 12-190. Bicycle helmets required.
(a) Every person fifteen (15) years of age or under operating a bicycle on a public street, sidewalk, greenway, or
other right-of-way or on any property owned or controlled by the Town shall wear a protective helmet on his or her
head, with the chin strap securely fastened under the chin. Such helmet shall be fitted to the size of the operator and
shall meet or exceed the standards for bicycle helmet use and wear as set by ANSI (American National Standards
Institute) or the Snell Memorial Foundation.
(b) No passenger fifteen (15) years of age or under may ride on a bicycle on any of the locations enumerated in
subsection (a) without wearing a helmet as described in subsection (a).
(c) No parent or guardian of any juvenile bicycle operator or passenger as described in subsections (a) and (b) above
shall knowingly allow a violation of this section.
